What makes Brown Miniature Poodles unique:

A brown Miniature is not a Poodle for everyone.  You must have patience and a sense of humor to deal with them.  They are known as the "clowns of the breed."   They live up to their name too.  They love to play chase me games, and then coming willingly on their terms.     They are very inquisitive and always interested in what is going on, down right nosey.

How they get that beautiful chocolate color:

I like to breed brown to brown, which results in an all brown litter. I do not like to do this more than one generation, because it can lighten eye color and nose pigment.   A dark brown is a beautiful color.   If you breed brown to brown too often,  then yellow eyes and liver noses can come up.  This does not make for a  soft pretty expression.  It gives a harsh look to the face.  Therefore, I like to breed black, carrying a brown gene, to a brown. Then you get black and brown puppies in a litter.   I will also breed two blacks together with both of them carrying the brown gene, then the litter usually has at least one brown puppy.    The browns resulting will have nice dark eye color, as well as dark noses.
How I began breeding Brown Miniature Poodles:
I happened into the color brown in Miniature Poodles by accident really.  I sent my first mini girl back into her line for breeding, when she had all her health testing and was old enough to produce a litter.   I had chosen an older Champion black Miniature Poodle male for my black girl.   The owner of the stud dog called me after having my girl for a few days and informed me the older male was not interested in her at all.   He was really getting up there in years and was evidently no longer interested in the ladies.  She gave me the choice of returning my girl not bred, or breeding her to her top male at that time, who was hot after her, but he was a brown.  I knew nothing about brown poodles, but wanted a litter of my own Miniature Poodles, so I opted to breed her to the Champion Brown Miniature  boy.

Well that was my beginning of South Paws Miniature Poodles.  It was a wise decision I made.  Although my girl carried a brown gene, it was far back in the pedigree.  Her litter was all black puppies, but by having a brown father the puppies would produce brown, either being bred to another brown or by breeding to a black carrying the brown gene.

I am 6 generation down the road with many home-produced AKC Champion Miniature Poodles.  I adore the browns.  Now the browns outnumber the blacks.

I enjoy a brown Miniature Poodle, they are such a delight.  My puppies are raised in my home and are socialized.   I feed top quality food, and provide good Vet care.  All puppies are checked by a Vet before leaving.  I keep up to date on PRA checks, this is very important also.
